Many models are sold with two engines or two gearboxes, and the choice between them changes the running cost more than most buyers expect. This article puts the variants of six models side by side, using the same city and highway routes for each pair where V3Cars tested them.

Reading the pairs

  • Dzire: the AMT beats the manual in the city, and the manual is slightly ahead on the highway.
  • Triber: the AMT is slightly better in the city, and the manual is slightly better on the highway, so the two are close.
  • Taigun: the 1.0 turbo with the 8-speed automatic is the more efficient of the two, and it comes closer to its claim on the highway.
  • Virtus: the 1.5 DCT is more efficient than the 1.0 automatic on both routes.
  • Sierra: diesel and petrol are tested as separate cars, and the diesel's highway figure is far above the petrol's.
  • Syros: the diesel automatic beats the petrol DCT on both routes in this test.

Data notes

  • Each variant was tested once, and the pairs were not always tested on the same date.
  • The pairs share the route, but traffic and weather differ from one test to another.
