Skoda Auto India has officially launched the facelifted Slavia at a starting price of Rs. 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), confirming the broad strokes of what we flagged in our earlier preview — the Slavia's platform-sibling relationship with the Volkswagen Virtus holds, but Skoda has gone further than expected with a genuinely segment-first comfort feature. Deliveries are scheduled to begin next week.

What's New

  • All-new 8-speed torque-converter automatic, replacing the previous automatic option on the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine — a meaningful upgrade in smoothness and ratio spread over the outgoing gearbox
  • Segment-first rear-seat massage function — a genuinely unusual inclusion for a C-segment sedan at this price point, typically reserved for premium sedans well above this bracket
  • AI assistant integrated into the infotainment system
  • Revised exterior styling
  • Updated feature list across the range

Why the 8-Speed AT Matters

Most rivals in this segment — including the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Slavia's own Virtus sibling — top out at a 6- or 7-speed automatic. An 8-speed torque-converter unit typically delivers smoother shifts, better highway cruising refinement at lower RPM, and often slightly improved fuel efficiency compared to a gearbox with fewer ratios — a genuine differentiator if Skoda has specced it well.

Why the Rear-Seat Massage Feature Is a Big Deal

Rear-seat massage functions are almost unheard of outside luxury sedans costing multiples of the Slavia's price. If this feature performs as advertised, it gives Skoda a genuinely unique selling point against the Verna, City and Virtus — none of which currently offer anything comparable — and could meaningfully shift buyer preference for anyone who spends significant time being driven rather than driving.

Slavia vs Virtus: Still Platform Siblings, Now More Differentiated

Until now, choosing between the Slavia and Virtus largely came down to styling preference and dealer proximity, given their shared mechanicals. With the 8-speed AT and massage seats landing on the Slavia specifically, Skoda may be positioning its sedan as the more comfort-and-tech-focused option within the shared platform, leaving Volkswagen's Virtus (and its recent Anniversary Edition) to lean on sportier branding instead. Worth watching whether Volkswagen follows with matching updates to the Virtus.

Final Word

At Rs. 9.99 lakh, the Slavia facelift undercuts the Rs. 10 lakh mark while adding two genuinely differentiated features — an 8-speed automatic and rear massage seats — that few rivals in this price bracket can match. For buyers cross-shopping the C-segment sedan space, this facelift gives Skoda a stronger case than it's had in years against the Verna, City and its own Virtus sibling.
