Mercedes-Benz announced a global product-development overhaul on 16 October 2026, using an AI-based Product Lifecycle Management platform called PLM.AI. The company puts the investment at around €500 million and says the programme can shorten development time by up to 30%.
What the programme changes
PLM.AI is intended to connect engineering information with procurement, manufacturing, sales and aftersales. CONTACT Software supplies the core platform through CONTACT Elements, while Siemens contributes design, simulation and digital-validation technology. Mercedes-Benz retains control of its data and the AI models developed from it.
The practical idea is to make the consequences of a design change visible across departments earlier. An alteration to a component can affect more than its own drawing: tooling, cost, software and vehicle validation may also need attention. A connected record can help teams identify those dependencies before work is repeated.
How to read the headline figures
| Company figure | Scope |
|---|---|
| Up to 30% | Potential reduction in development time |
| Around 17 months | Shorter new-vehicle development period described in the announcement |
| Up to 50% | Expected gains in individual engineering processes |
These percentages measure different things and should not be added together. They are company targets or expectations, rather than independent measurements of a completed vehicle programme. The announcement does not establish that every future model will arrive 17 months earlier.
Why it matters beyond the engineering office
Our assessment is that earlier coordination could be more consequential than simply automating isolated tasks. Identifying a conflict before a part reaches physical validation can avoid a cycle of redesign and retesting. Whether that translates into more reliable products, lower prices or quicker launches will need evidence from production programmes.
PLM.AI concerns how vehicles are developed. Mercedes-Benz's separate expanded NVIDIA partnership concerns driving technology. Reading the two together shows where the company is applying AI, while keeping the purpose and evidence for each programme clear.
