The XUV 3XO ZNG is a factory bi-fuel vehicle: it has both petrol and CNG systems. Mahindra says it automatically switches to petrol when CNG runs low. Launch details also describe gas-leak detection that can trigger a move to petrol. These functions may reduce inconvenience, but they are not a substitute for understanding the displays, keeping both fuels available and following the owner's manual.
What a changeover does, and does not, guarantee
Automatic switching can let a journey continue when the gas supply is exhausted. It does not promise a particular total driving range. The launch information we reviewed did not establish a verified usable CNG capacity in kilograms or an independent CNG range result. Do not multiply an assumed cylinder water capacity by 24.7km/kg and call that the car's range: water-equivalent cylinder volume and dispensed gas mass are different measures.
Petrol is still part of the ownership picture. Maintain an appropriate fuel level according to the manual, and include petrol purchases in running-cost records. A dual-fuel car's instantaneous or average display can help you observe use, but the display may use a different sampling interval from a fill-to-fill calculation.
Demonstrate the controls before delivery
Have the dealership show the fuel-mode selection control and the indication for the active fuel. Ask how separate petrol and CNG levels are displayed, how the average and instantaneous efficiency screens work, and what message appears when gas is low. The demonstration should be in a real ZNG, not a petrol-only display photo.
Ask a technician or trained representative to point out the CNG filling point and the NGV fast-fill valve mentioned at launch. Obtain the manual's refuelling procedure, filler-adaptor instructions if applicable and any station compatibility guidance. Never force a nozzle that does not fit.
A sensible first long-trip plan
Identify working CNG stations along your route and a backup petrol stop. Keep a margin for queues, closures and variable gas fills. After several refuellings, record kilometres, kilograms actually dispensed and petrol used; your own measured pattern is more useful than a single brochure figure. Drive within posted limits and make planned breaks rather than trying to exhaust the gas deliberately to prove the switching system.
If a gas warning appears
Treat an indicated leak or persistent CNG-system warning seriously. Follow the vehicle manual, stop in a safe place, switch the vehicle off as directed and seek authorised service. Do not continue experimenting with fuel modes, work on the cylinders, or try to diagnose a leak by smell alone. The detection feature is a protective system, not a reason to ignore a warning.
Questions for the delivery handover
Ask what indicator confirms petrol mode; what happens when gas runs low; whether a detected fault locks out CNG until service; where the emergency instructions are; and who to call for roadside assistance. Get the answers from the official handbook for your model year.
Takeaway: the automatic changeover is useful, especially beyond dense CNG networks. It does not turn an unspecified tank capacity into a guaranteed range. Understand the indicators and measure your own use before planning ambitious fuel stops.
