Updated powertrain facts from the launch

The India-spec Hyundai BAYON uses a four-cylinder 1.5-litre MPi petrol engine rated at 84.4 kW (115 PS) and 143.8 Nm. It is offered with a six-speed manual transmission and, on selected trims, Hyundai’s Intelligent Variable Transmission (iVT). The earlier pre-launch article called the automatic a CVT; the official India product material names it iVT, so buyers should use that current terminology when comparing variants or discussing a booking.

The trim list places manual gearboxes across HX2, HX3, HX3+, HX5, HX6, HX8 and HX10. The iVT is listed with HX5, HX6, HX8 and HX10. Hyundai also lists Eco, Normal and Sport drive modes, paddle shifters and Idle Stop & Go. Dash Boost Mode and Sporty Drive Tech are tied to the iVT package. These features alter the driving response or convenience; they do not change the published 115 PS peak engine output.

Hyundai’s launch release does not state an official certified fuel-efficiency figure for the BAYON. We therefore do not repeat unverified mileage estimates. No CNG option is confirmed in the launch specification either. Buyers who prioritize running cost should ask Hyundai for the latest certified figure and calculate fuel expenditure using their annual distance and local petrol price rather than applying an estimate from another car with a similar engine.

On a test drive, compare both gearboxes on the same route. With the manual, evaluate clutch effort and gear selection in traffic. With the iVT, check low-speed response, overtaking behaviour and cabin sound during acceleration. Confirm the gearbox on the written variant code: iVT is not available on the first three HX trims. More on that choice is in our manual versus iVT guide.

Pre-launch archive

The Hyundai Bayon engine is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol. It is paired with a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic. Here is what that means for performance, mileage and everyday driving.

Quick Answer

The Bayon makes 115 PS of power and 144 Nm of torque. It is offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic. Claimed mileage figures have not been revealed. A factory-fitted CNG version is possible later but is not confirmed.

Hyundai Bayon Engine Specifications

Specification Detail
Engine 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol
Cylinders Four
Power 115 PS
Torque 144 Nm
Gearbox options 6-speed manual, CVT automatic
Claimed mileage Not announced
Diesel Not expected
CNG Speculated, not confirmed

What It Is Like To Live With

A naturally aspirated petrol engine is usually smooth and easy to drive in the city. The CVT automatic suits stop-and-go traffic and highway cruising, while the 6-speed manual gives control and typically better value for money. Reports say the engine is shared with the Creta's 1.5-litre petrol, though the Creta's turbo-petrol and diesel options are not expected on the Bayon.

Expected Mileage

Hyundai has not published an ARAI-claimed mileage. Naturally aspirated petrol SUVs in this size class generally return a moderate real-world fuel efficiency, and the manual and CVT can differ. Once the official number is out, you can use a fuel cost calculator to estimate your monthly running cost based on your driving.

Will There Be A CNG Bayon?

Some reports say a factory-fitted CNG option, with an underbody tank to protect boot space, could be offered, which would make it Hyundai's first model above four metres with factory CNG. Hyundai has not confirmed this. If it arrives, it would appeal to high-mileage buyers.

Manual Or CVT?

Choose manual if Choose CVT if
You want a lower price You drive mostly in the city
You enjoy driving involvement You want an easy daily drive
You want potentially better fuel economy You do long highway runs and prefer less effort
